The Shy Violet – Teenager Speed [LP]

Most of the record came to form during a muggy summer in Frederick, Maryland. A younger Jordan Romero wrote and recorded the songs on a newly purchased eight track Tascam tape machine, when he was not out working on a chicken farm or staying out late some smoky night. Teenager Speed catalogs youthful romance and mischief, and that familiar adolescent bewilderment, that of a thoughtful young person approaching a daunting and convoluted adulthood.

Much of Romero’s production in this album hinges on the sonic character of the tape machine, it’s just a good warm coat for this coldhearted digital age. It is as if all the artifacts of the recording are revealed as instruments themselves, seemingly as intentional as the notes Romero plucks out on the guitar or the drum machine played by hand in songs like Dirtbike and Blighted. All the music seems to reach you from across a great gurgling dreamscape.

The songwriting has all the classicality of a car radio left on in his parents’ heyday, yet it still very much rings of Romero’s own time. The melodies and arrangements fall into funked-up familiar forms where all structure has some odd passing recognition. In It’s Vacation we’re listening to something like the madness of a Beach Boys track through a dirty window in a dark house, with Romero directly summoning their ghosts, incanting the refrain “catch a wave”.

Somehow all the songs seem to be a hyperactive fount sourced from the enormous catalog of records Romero has ingested since he was a child. As if we have plugged an old RCA cable in his ears are listening to the memories of songs he loves in stereo; in this record we have them on a dirty tap.

The process of recording itself configures Romero’s songwriting and speeds it along to a masterful pop meltdown of classic themes and structures, as if Romero was hoping to memorialize the best summer of his teendom, a summer of weird sex and trips to the beach and strange girls peddling dirt bikes down dark roads. Teenager Speed is a piece of history and marks the end of The Shy Violet project. In many ways it is both epilogue and prologue. Here we have an earnest farewell to a period of time in Romero’s work, as well as a foundational overture for the music he is now writing and recording under his given name. Furthermore, this record is evidence that, even when green and wet behind the ears, Romero has always known what obsesses him about songwriting and recording, and has always known all the clever turns to take down such familiar roads to get to the scenic route. He must have just been born with it.

Sunrises America is an audio document of American life and culture as seen through the eyes of The Shy Violet, recorded fresh off the road after touring the South last March. At the time, Jordan Romero had been continuously recording, re-recording, and buying equipment to make the songs sound good (but not too good) which destroyed the enjoyable aspect of making music. However, on Sunrises America Romero forgets about making it sound “acceptable” and quickly recorded the answering machine collages, underwater soul songs, and bad pop music that make up this album, ultimately using the cassette tape as a medium and not an instrument.

Jordan Romero’s TAR is a collection of recordings produced from 2012 to 2014 in Baltimore, MD. This album is transitional, representing the threshold between Romero’s prior work as The Shy Violet and the new and ongoing material produced under his own name. Romero’s songwriting here is curiously narrative and coming of age, the strong melodies and tricky arrangements warm and gooey, all melting away like a fog horn down in the harbor. TAR is like closing a door on hard and happy times alike, because usually there’s nothing we can do but head on down the road. But, like bygone days, this album is sticky and you won’t be able to scrape it off.

Don Teel Curtis’s Tornado Watch is a fever-dream largely about death and grief and the relentless march of time, a patchwork of drunken recordings mostly made on a ranch in Texas’s tornado alley, after the loss of a loved one. Curtis’s insistence on leaving elements imperfect and spontaneous makes for an appropriately uncertain backdrop for the discomforting themes dealt with in the album.

The language in Tornado Watch is often as humorous as it is unsettling; surrealistic mini-narratives about new age hopelessness and hypocrisy and self-delusion. Some songs seem to joke around about the relativism of morality and cultural archetypes, such as in the song “Regular Man.”

“I don’t know what kind of man I am,

I guess,

I’m just a regular man.”

Among a cast of gross charlatans and misbehavers rise questions about the desperation of faith, of believing in ghosts and of looking for solace in convoluted belief systems, as heard in “Spiritual Advisory on CH 3.”

“…like a pale ne’er-do-well drinking on a workday,

the naked shaman with an Anglo-Saxon name.

Don’t tell me, he just wants to drink your sweat,

so he can tell you, there’s something wrong with you…”

And Curtis’s offbeat shapeshifting vocals makes everything all the more intimately uncomfortable. Many of the vocal takes seem to be one-offs, done in some kind of pitiful stupor or sorrowful tantrum, pulled along in a polluted stream-0f-consciousness headed to God knows where. Hopefully toward some kind of catharsis, like in the slightly-necrophilic and mournful song “Brain Chemistry,” in which he finally belts out:

“Then I’m gonna eat you when you’re dead

like a buzzard on a highway with my head

bowed in your guts.

Then I’m gonna live my life in a godless rage

burning sage in a house in a new age

to chase your meaningless spirit away.”

In this song maybe we have heard the rueful crux of the whole album. Curtis seems to be issuing a warning, maybe that we should all be on the watch for bad weather and hunker down, because inevitably, if nothing else, we will all lose each other in someway or another to the fickle nature of the chemicals in our brains and the degradations of time. We are not as special as we imagine ourselves to be and our ephemeral identities are all governed by a fallible biology. Tornado Watch is a crackling, wry, and intimately troubling reminder of this, and it is obviously a record about someone going through some sad and confusing times.

LAMB is a nightmare where pop music is heard distantly while you arrive at a scrap yard in a powdered wig. And in this distance is a lithe figure keeping an eye out for shade in a sweltering Baltimore summer. You inch a little bit closer and can see Jordan Romero. He’s wearing a Department of Public Works uniform, blowing the dust off forms exotic and broken-down, talking about sea pigeons and lemons under ice. All throughout the Maryland region you can hear it, a grinding, grumbling sticky sound like melodic dump trucks tracing the city. In this place all popular and unpopular music is left to bake in a hot car.

At first you come across an old girl singing alone in a storm drain about the terrible sweetness of braiding a friend’s oily hair and reminiscing about childhoods in carpools, something you might hear in Debby Jinny Johnnie. Down the road there is a man perched on a highway median wringing dirty hands of French-tipped nails, a power drill hanging from his utility belt. Not far away from this man are the dark quarry pits, where there is music of tires spinning in mud and beef-bodied men hollering at each other over the noise of their engines, a sound like Lemon Under Ice. And over where the sun sets in LAMB a cowgirl gallops off into the dusk, never once looking back.

All about in LAMB there is a glittery heat of spent gift cards on the sidewalks, old chattering friends behaving the way they always have, waking up angry and mellowing out as the day grows long, until they fall asleep. And always there is this delicate person, Jordan Romero, uniformed in the shade of an overpass, suffering in the heat, eyes sweating. All we can really see of him is a smudge on the city, a finely dressed hypnotic Sasquatch in the distance, trying to help you feel better about the bad things, and worse about the good things.

Romero must have come from Maryland. The places you might find Romero, are the places you might find in LAMB. Watch the pendulum and listen to the sounds haunting the buildings of city government, or to the hum in a broadcast over WJZ-TV. Close your eyes and see a poster of Levar Burton on a wall in the Frederick County Public Library. LAMB is a hypnosis project to revitalize the new rococo.
